Danville man died from multiple injuries in I-74 crash
CHAMPAIGN — An autopsy conducted Tuesday morning for a Danville man killed after his car crossed to the other side of Interstate 74 and collided with a truck Monday morning indicates that the man died from multiple injuries he received in the crash.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup identified the man as Edward Hughes, 43. Illinois State Police at Pesotum said they don’t know why Mr. Hughes crossed from eastbound I-74 to the other side just after 11 a.m.
He was driving a 1999 Buick, about a half-mile west of Champaign, when his car crossed the median and struck a westbound semitrailer truck driven by Shannon Fees, 39, of Jacksonville.
The car came to rest in the center median while the truck went into the ditch on the westbound side and caught fire.
Northrup said on Tuesday afternoon that the autopsy, conducted in Bloomington, indicated that Mr. Hughes died from multiple injuries he received in the crash.
“However, he may have experienced a medical crisis or other condition at the time of the crash,” Northrup said.
Northrup said he is still waiting for the results of toxicology tests.
Champaign fire spokeswoman Dena Schumacher said Fees was out of the truck by the time firefighters arrived. She was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where she was treated and released.
A passenger in Mr. Hughes’ car, Violena Jones, 38, of Danville, was also out of the car when firefighters arrived. She was also treated at Carle and released.
Police said Jones was wearing a seat belt but Mr. Hughes was not. He was pronounced dead at Carle at 11:41 a.m.
Traffic was backed up for several hours. Schumacher said the last firefighters left the accident scene at 2:40 p.m.
