Drug take-back event set for April 30 in Tuscola

TUSCOLA -- The Douglas County sheriff's office will accept unused or outdated prescription medication on April 30, between 12:01 a.m. and midnight.

The office is at 920 S. Washington St., Tuscola, just off U.S. 36.

The first ever national take-back campaign, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration on Sept. 25, resulted in more than 242,000 pounds of prescription drugs being turned in for proper disposal at more than 4,000 sites in all 50 states.

The Champaign County sheriff's office in Urbana will not participate as it did last fall because the event conflicts with the Illinois Marathon, said a sheriff's spokeswoman.

The DEA reports that currently, there are no legal means to transfer possession of certain prescription drugs for disposal. Until permanent regulations are in place, the agency will continue to hold one-day take-back programs.

A release said the take-back is an attempt to address the more than 7 million Americans who abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Survey on Drug Use and Health. And every day, on average, 2,500 teens use them to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
