Two charged in scrap-metal theft

URBANA -- Two men who police say stole scrap metal from an Urbana residence and recycled it for cash have been charged with burglary.

Jeffery Robinson, 50, who listed an address in the 200 block of East Church Street, Champaign, and Mario Belle, 27, who listed an address in the 700 block of Willow Pond, Rantoul, are accused of entering a shed in the 400 block of West Main Street on Monday and stealing a furnace and refrigerator, which they then took to Mack's Twin City Recycling at 2808 N. Lincoln Ave., U.

Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan said the owner of the stolen appliances called recycling centers Monday to see if such items had been brought in. Learning that they had been brought into Mack's and who brought the items in, he contacted police.

While an officer was at Mack's investigating about 1:45 p.m. Monday, Robinson and Belle came in, Morgan said. They were arrested there.

Judge John Kennedy set bond for the pair at $1,500 each and told them to be back in court June 7.
