Urbana man arrested for attack in Paxton home
PAXTON -- An Urbana man was arrested in connection with a robbery and stabbing incident on Easter Sunday at the home of a couple who minister a Paxton church.
Formal charges are expected to be filed Monday against Daniel D. Cobb, 51, according to the Ford County state's attorney's office.
Cobb was arrested Sunday night and remains at the Ford County Jail awaiting a bond hearing scheduled for Monday afternoon.
Cobb allegedly entered the residence of the Rev. Jim Wood and his wife, the Rev. DeDe Wood, the co-lead pastors for the Vineyard Church's campus in Paxton. During the alleged robbery attempt, Cobb stabbed the Woods with a knife as they struggled to detain him, said Paxton Police Chief Bob Bane.
Paxton police responded to a 911 call at 7:44 p.m. from the Woods' home in the 200 block of West State Street in Paxton. One of the couple's four children called 911 to report that a man wearing a mask had entered the home and was armed with two knives, Bane said.
While police were on the way, they learned someone in the home had been cut and that the intruder was fighting with residents, according to a news release from the Paxton Police Department.
When police arrived, Bane said, Jim and DeDe Wood were in the living room trying to detain Cobb. Police then "took control of the offender" after several attempts by Cobb to resist arrest, police said in the release.
Meanwhile, Jim and DeDe Wood were taken to the emergency room at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for treatment of stab and bite wounds to their hands and arms, Bane said. Their four children, who were in the home at the time and witnessed the attack, were not injured, police said.
Cobb was treated for injuries at Gibson Area Hospital in Gibson City and released to police custody.
"Through the altercation, he received cuts to his right eye and chin," Bane said, noting that his face "got pounded against" a floor grate during the struggle with the Woods.
"And he used to have a pony tail," Bane added. "He doesn't have a pony tail now. A big wad of his hair got pulled out, and that's when (the Woods) were stabbed on their hands and arms.
"The husband had got him down (on the floor), and the wife got on his back and proceeded to beat him, pulling his hair."
Bane said he was "proud" of the Woods' efforts to detain Cobb, although he noted that confronting an armed suspect is typically "not something we want to encourage."
Jim Wood told the Paxton Record on Monday that he could not comment on the incident because he was asked by police not to. He did say that his family is OK and in good health.
Bane said police believe Cobb targeted the Woods.
Bane said the Woods were acquainted with Cobb through the Vineyard Church's campus in Urbana, which Cobb attends. Bane said Cobb was apparently trying to rob the Woods of a specific possession.
Cobb's vehicle was found parked, with the keys in its ignition, at the intersection of American and Pells streets, about a block away from the Woods' home, Bane said. Police impounded the vehicle, Bane said.
The Paxton Police Department continued to investigate the case Monday, Bane said.
