Ex-employee accused of theft with UI credit card

URBANA -- A Mattoon woman who allegedly embezzled money from the University of Illinois by using a departmental credit card for herself is due back in court June 28.

Dana Epperson, 40, of Mattoon, was arraigned Tuesday in Champaign County Circuit Court on two counts of theft of government property.

The Class 2 felony charges allege that between August 2008 and August 2010, she stole services and cash for herself, valued in excess of $3,000.

Assistant State's Attorney Steve Ziegler said UI police determined that among the items she bought with a credit card belonging to the mechanical engineering department were tires, airline tickets to Florida and a hotel room there.

Epperson was a communication specialist. She is no longer a UI employee.

If convicted, Epperson faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.
