Rantoul man arrested after traffic stop

RANTOUL — Police arrested a Rantoul man on a drug charge following a traffic stop Friday night.

Kamren Washington, 20, who listed an address in the 1000 block of Pinecrest Drive, Rantoul, asked for more time to hire an attorney after he was charged on Monday with unlawful possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance. If convicted, Washington could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

According to a Rantoul police report, officers pulled over a vehicle driven by Washington for speeding at about 9 p.m. Friday at Briarcliff Drive and Illinois Drive.

When police saw an open container of alcohol in the car, they conducted a search of the vehicle. The report said that police arrested Washington after they found 2.4 grams (0.08 ounces) of a substance suspected to be cocaine packaged in five bags in the center console.

Judge John Kennedy set Washington's bond at $15,000.

Washington's next court appearance was set for May 17.
