15-year-old pleads in Champaign child porn case
URBANA — A Champaign teen who admitted downloading child pornography to his home computer faces penalties ranging from probation to juvenile prison next month.
The 15-year-old boy pleaded guilty in Champaign County Circuit Court Tuesday to aggravated child pornography.
He admitted to Judge Heidi Ladd that on April 29, 2010, he downloaded multiple pictures of girls under the age of 13 depicted in lewd sex acts or exposing themselves.
Assistant State's Attorney Adam Dill said Urbana police investigator Tim McNaught , working undercover, discovered the pornography being downloaded to a computer IP address that was located in the boy's Champaign home, where he lives with his mother and teen-age sister.
He obtained a search warrant for the home and seized the computers in early April of this year.
The charge to which the youth pleaded guilty said he intended to share the images with others through a file-sharing service.
Dill said the teen, a Centennial High School student, told McNaught that he liked pictures of girls ages 2, 3 and 4 engaged in sex acts. He initially told McNaught that he had only been downloading the pictures for a few months but McNaught's forensic examination of the computers he seized suggested it had been going on for much longer.
In return for the youth's guilty plea, Dill agreed not to file charges against him for other acts and not to seek a transfer of his case to adult court for prosecution.
Ladd set sentencing for July 7.
