Champaign man gets 15 years for home invasion

URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted his role in a violent home invasion that happened in 2008 in Champaign has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Dextermetious Wardlow, 25, who listed an address in the 500 block of Alabama Avenue, pleaded guilty before Judge Harry Clem Thursday to home invasion, admitting he took part in a Dec. 5, 2008, assault on a number of people at a house in the 200 block of East Hill Street.

Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark said Wardlow was one of four men who went to the home. One knocked on the door and asked for a man by name. When that man appeared, the other three rushed in. She said Wardlow shoved a sawed-off shotgun in the man's face. That occupant and four other adults in the house were ordered to lie on the living room floor while the house was ransacked by the intruders, who were looking for drugs and money, Clark said.

Clark said one of the intruders fired a gun inside but no one was hit.

Clark said Wardlow was given credit for 283 days already served in the county jail. It wasn't until last August that police had enough evidence to get a warrant for his arrest. He's been in jail since.

Cases against the other three men are unresolved, Clark said.
