Package at bank turns out to be harmless

CHAMPAIGN — A package left on a counter at a Busey Bank facility on Thursday afternoon brought out police and a bomb squad, but it turned out to be harmless.

Champaign Police Chief R.T. Finney said Champaign police officers were called to Busey Bank, 2011 W. Springfield Ave., Champaign, at about 5 p.m. Thursday after the package was discovered on a counter at the bank.

Finney said the police department’s bomb squad had been conducting a demonstration for the Citizen’s Police Academy, so the squad was also called to the scene to join the police officers as a precaution.

Finney said a bank customer left the package, which Finney described as “some sort of solar device,” on the counter and returned to get it.
