Man sentenced to prison in store robbery
URBANA — An Urbana man who admitted his role in the hold-up of a Champaign convenience store has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Robert Franklin, 45, who listed an address in the 400 block of Prairie Green, pleaded guilty Tuesday before Champaign County Judge Harry Clem to robbery.
He admitted he took part in the March 30 holdup of the Colonial Pantry, 211 E. University Ave., C.
At the time, police said two men scuffled with employees and took money from the register. No weapons were displayed.
Because of prior convictions for aggravated criminal sexual assault, residential burglary, robbery, theft and unlawful restraint, Franklin had to be sentenced as a Class X felon to between six and 30 years in prison.
Clem recommended that Franklin receive mental health treatment while in prison.
Co-defendant Gregory Rogers, 44, of Champaign, is scheduled to enter a guilty plea next week.
In other cases recently resolved in Champaign County Circuit Court:
— Robert L. Moore, 37, who listed an address in the 600 block of West Beardsley Avenue, Champaign, was sentenced to six years in prison for possession with intent to deliver cannabis.
He pleaded guilty to that charge before Clem Wednesday.
Assistant State's Attorney Dan Clifton said Moore was arrested March 25, 2010, after Champaign police conducted a court-ordered search of his home and located about a half-pound of cannabis there.
Clifton said Moore had prior convictions for possession with intent to deliver a look-alike substance, possession with intent to deliver cannabis, possession of a controlled substance, and burglary.
— Judge Heidi Ladd sentenced Ronald S. Wilkerson, 42, whose last known address was in the 1500 block of Honeysuckle Lane, Champaign, to 30 months of probation for possessing cocaine.
In April, Ladd found that Wilkerson had crack cocaine on him when he was arrested in November 2009 for an unrelated robbery case that was later dismissed.
Last July, a jury convicted Wilkerson of the more serious charge of possession with intent to deliver cocaine and Ladd later sentenced him to 13 years in prison. But Wilkerson won a new trial after Judge Tom Difanis heard evidence that prosecutor Sarah Carlson had a novelty luggage tag on her file cart during Wilkerson's trial that said "GUILTY."
Wilkerson opted to have Ladd hear the evidence on retrial. Ladd found that the state had not proved that Wilkerson intended to sell the drugs but instead just that he possessed them for his own use.
Wilkerson had prior convictions for attempted murder and armed robbery.
— Ladd sentenced Christopher Hurt, 30, who listed an address in the 1500 block of Hunter Street, Urbana, to 30 months of probation for theft with a prior theft conviction. Hurt pleaded guilty to stealing $267 worth of coins that an employee of a laundry had left on the counter of the Phillips Gas station at 1511 E. Washington St., U, on Dec. 27.
