Man accused of causing Champaign mall shooting formally charged
CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign man is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $500,000 bond in connection with a shooting at the Market Place Mall in early May.
Marquis Thompson, 21, whose last known address was in the 2500 block of West Springfield Avenue, Champaign, pleaded innocent on Monday to aggravated battery with a firearm.
According to the charge, Thompson, or one for whose conduct he is legally responsible, committed battery by shooting Tony Brock, 28, of Champaign, on May 1.
According to police, Thompson is alleged to have called people he knew in Milwaukee to find Brock and harm him because Brock had gotten into a fight with Thompson at a Champaign bar earlier that day.
Thompson was not located at the mall when Brock was shot but is accused of being accountable for the actions of six other men — all from Milwaukee — who were arrested that day. They remain in the Champaign County Jail awaiting trial.
Thompson was arrested last week in Chicago by U.S. Marshals.
Judge Michael Q. Jones set Thompson's next court appearance for Aug. 2.
Marquis Thompson's cousin, Dontrell Thompson, 22, of Milwaukee, is alleged to have shot Brock near the entrance to LensCrafters outside the mall. He was charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.
