Man faces DUI, drug charges
URBANA — A Champaign man who police say hit a young girl on a bicycle, allegedly while driving drunk and under the influence of cannabis, is due back in court July 5.
Jason Gaddis, 28, who listed an address in the 800 block of West Vine Street, was arrested Thursday in connection with an incident that happened about 5:15 p.m. in the 400 block of Vine Street in Champaign near the intersection with Prairie.
A Champaign police report said a 9-year-old girl who lives on Prairie Street was riding her bicycle across Vine Street from south to north. She was going back up on the sidewalk when she was allegedly hit by Gaddis, who was westbound on Vine Street.
Witnesses said Gaddis did not stop so they followed him to the 700 block of West Hill Street, where they encouraged him to stop and waited until police arrived.
The girl was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where she was treated and released.
A police report said Gaddis was asked to perform field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment. He said he had consumed a couple of beers at a Champaign bar and smoked cannabis earlier in the day. Police found a small amount of cannabis on him, the report said.
Gaddis was also taken to Carle for evaluation, then to jail.
On Friday, Gaddis was arraigned on misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of drugs and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Judge John Kennedy set his bond at $100,000. Gaddis posted $10,000 cash and was released later Friday.
