Woman who hit police car gets conditional discharge

URBANA — A Champaign woman who admitted she hit a police car while trying to retrieve voice mail from her cellphone has been sentenced to six months of conditional discharge.

Sarah Lopez, 29, who listed an address in the 1500 block of Lincolnshire Drive, pleaded guilty Monday in Champaign County Circuit Court to texting while driving and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, both petty traffic offenses.

She was ticketed on Jan. 14 after she struck the back of a stopped Champaign police squad car, knocking it into the rear end of another stopped squad car in front of it.

The accident happened about 11:30 p.m. in the 500 block of East University Avenue where the two officers were out on a traffic stop. Brian Rogers was in his car writing tickets while Jerry Christian was leaning through Rogers' passenger window when they heard a bang. The noise was Lopez's car hitting the car behind them, pushing it into the car Rogers was in.

The officers were taken to Carle Foundation Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Lopez refused medical treatment.

She was fined $200 for texting while driving and was sentenced to conditional discharge and ordered to make $1,000 in restitution for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
