Motorist ticketed after pedestrian struck in Urbana

URBANA — An Urbana woman was ticketed after her vehicle hit a pedestrian crossing the street Tuesday afternoon.

An Urbana police report said Nancy Westcott, 58, of the 800 block of South Urbana Avenue was driving east on Washington Street just after 3 p.m. when she struck April Wilson, 21.

Wilson, who listed an address in the 900 block of South Maple Street, Urbana, was walking west on Washington crossing Urbana Avenue when Westcott went to turn north on Urbana and hit her in the middle of the intersection.

Wilson was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, which had no information on her condition Wednesday afternoon.

Westcott was issued a ticket for failure to yield.

What was this driver thinking???? Geez, people simply don't pay attention, I guess.

In incidents like this, is the driver required to take a drug/alcohol test? Are cell phone records (for both driver and pedestrians) checked? If not, why not?

It's easy to make assumptions when details are skimmed. I don't see how this report is at all helpful to the community. They didn't even get the age of the motorist right.

Thank you for pointing out my error on the driver's age. It has now been corrected. And I published all the details that were available from the police report.
