No injuries in Rantoul fire

RANTOUL -- Fire destroyed a Rantoul home Tuesday morning.

Rantoul Fire Department was called to a fire at a mobile home at 1205 Brookshire Drive at 10:23 a.m.

The trailer was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. The call was phoned in via 911 by cell phone, a Rantoul Police dispatcher said.

Fire Chief Ken Waters said no one was injured. The mobile home was occupied by Sabrina Hulbert and two teenage children.

Dewey Shreves, a Rantoul Fire Department investigator, said the two teens opened a storage room that contained a refrigerator and saw smoke. They alerted Hulbert, who was in the other room, and they got out a rear door.

Shreves said investigators do not believe the refrigerator was the cause of the blaze. Cause has been listed as undetermined. A countywide investigation team assisted.

The fire melted the vinyl siding on a mobile home immediately east of the trailer that was destroyed, Waters said.

One vehicle parked immediately south of the mobile home sustained a broken window. Otherwise, the vehicles were not damaged.

Waters estimated total damage to the mobile home and contents at $40,000. He had no estimate of damage to the neighboring mobile home.

Shreves said the blaze spread unusually fast.

“The fire was extremely advanced by the time we got there, which is rather abnormal,” Shreves said. “But we found nothing irregular.”

Fourteen men with four trucks responded from Rantoul. Thomasboro responded via mutual aid with a truck and firefighters.

Firefighters cleared the scene about 1:30 p.m.
