Associate judges all retained

SPRINGFIELD — The associate judges who serve citizens in East Central Illinois will hang on to their jobs for another four years.

Late last week, the director of the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts announced that 378 Illinois associate judges have been retained.

Circuit judges in Illinois, who are elected, vote every four years on whether or not to retain the associates. Circuit judges are the ones who appoint associates to their positions.

The circuit judges cast secret ballots which are tabulated by the AOIC.

Despite a recommendation from a lawyers' poll that Champaign County Associate Judge Holly Clemons not be retained, she was. Only 42 percent of the lawyers eligible to vote on the judges' qualifications did.

Other Champaign County associate judges retained are John Kennedy, Richard Klaus, Chase Leonhard, and Brian McPheters.

In Vermilion County, Associate Judges Mark Goodwin, Derek Girton and Karen Wall were retained.

Associate judges in Illinois earn $169,893 annually. Circuit judges earn $178,835.

What a world of privilege. $170K/year (or as much as 5.8 normal Illinois citizens earn). Job security. No real risks to the job. Their friends decide whether they can stay. No wonder even the teabaggers are advocating revolution.
