I don't walk alone at night anymore. I grew up in that neighborhood and it used to be safe.

Back in my childhood and adolescence the worse that happened was toiletpapering of trees and and occasional egg thrown at a house.

Get the cops out from in front of the taverns and make them go after the real criminals.

Having the police in front of the bars at closing has nothing to do with this crime. They have to go were the trouble is. Statistics bear out that numerous problems happen in this town in certain areas at and after bar closing. Also, the belief that somehow a police officer would be driving by at the exact moment this is happening only happens on televison. Go with the facts, not what you think.

I think the comment above yours is referencing that we waste too much manpower on DUI patrol (netting those who are legally above the limit, but not really impaired) and on special task forces like drug raids and tactical training. What we need is more patrol presence to stop the street crime that is ruining the perception of our community. While an officer may not be at the 'right place at the right time' seeing 5 patrol cars/bicycle officers in a small time frame may discourage criminals from taking action. We are fighting the perception of a crime wave, and the only way to fight that is to create a perception of a significant police presence.

So, the struggle caused the backpack to come open and a laptop magically fell out, there is an incomplete description of the attackers?
Why not the truth?
The attackers grabbed the backpack after the innocent person tried to defend himself... They unzipped it obviously to see what was in it that they could steal!
If this innocent person could not give any kind of description? Maybe he was too much in shock or fear to talk?
But really , the car was black, that is all we know at this point...
I feel for these victims, really I do.
No one can walk the streets of CU and be safe anymore, even during the daytime hours criminals are robbing people at gunpoint.

How many criminals are roaming and driving around with guns around CU? The gun laws need to be changed or this is just going to get worse and more decent people will just not want to live here.
The ones who cannot leave, it is really a shame and the cops could do more. Neighborhood watches could do more, locking criminals up instead of giving them probation could help as well.
I am sure there are many other ideas. My decision is to move my family out of this state. In a few days I will be crossing the border and heading out of here. Sad for the people who have had fond memories of growing up here and now feel they have lost their town. DO SOMETHING SOON ILLINOIS or THIS IS JUST GOING TO GET SO MUCH WORSE.
