Urbana man charged with DUI
URBANA — An Urbana man accused of hitting a pedestrian while driving drunk in Urbana over the weekend was criminally charged Monday in Champaign County Circuit Court.
John Means, 30, who listed an address in the 1100 block of East Main Street, was released from jail late Monday afternoon after posting $5,000 cash. He was charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.
Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan said Means was arrested late Sunday morning after an accident that occurred about 12 hours earlier.
Morgan said about 12:15 a.m. Sunday, Alice Branion, 39, of the 1100 block of Austin Drive, Urbana, was walking east across Cottage Grove when a car turned from Washington Street on to Cottage Grove Avenue and hit her with the side of his car.
Morgan said she was taken to Provena Covenant Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries and later released.
Witnesses saw the accident and noted the license plate number of the car as it drove away. Police found the car at Means' home a short time later. When no one answered the door, they had the car towed away.
Morgan said about 11 a.m. Sunday, Means called police to report his vehicle stolen. Police went to talk to Means and based on his own statement that he had been drinking and using drugs the night before, he was arrested.
Means is due back in court with an attorney July 15.
