Urbana police looking for motel robber

URBANA — Police are looking for a man who robbed a north Urbana motel at gunpoint late Monday.

Sgt. Dan Morgan said a man entered the Sleep Inn, 1908 N. Lincoln Ave., about 11:50 p.m., pointed a gun at the male clerk, and demanded cash.

The clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of money and the robber left the motel to the south.

He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and large black sunglasses. No age, height or weight was given for him.

The gun was described as a dark revolver. The robber was carrying a white plastic County Market bag, Morgan said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Urbana police department at 384-2320 or Crimestoppers at 373-8477.

So we know the color of the revolver and the color of the bag he put the money in, but not the color of the criminal? For real?

I think that it is more likely that you are hiding the race of this perp on purpose.

I was thinking the same thing!

Everyone be on the lookout for a black-hooded sweatshirt running 'round town.

Do ya recon the perpratater was about the same coler of his gun? We as law abiding citizens of illinois need right to carry laws for us. this kind of stuff would'nt happen very much after we "pack" too.

John O'Connor wrote on June 29, 2011 at 4:06 pm

So, you're alleging, with no evidence, that the robber was black. Then you set "we as law abiding citizens" against "them" in your attempt to argue for concealed carry. Do you see why so many people see cc advocates as racist yahoos who want to set up some false wild west mythology?

Yes, that's what he was assuming. And according to the follow-up article, he was right.

John O'Connor wrote on June 29, 2011 at 5:06 pm

What follow up article?

sinfonian11 wrote on June 29, 2011 at 3:06 pm

Yes, I'm sure it's a conspiracy to hide the identity of the suspect. The police don't really want to catch him. Come on. With a large hood and large sunglasses, it may have been difficult to see the guy's face. Especially if the lobby area isn't well lit, which is certainly possible. Not everything is a conspiracy...

ronaldo wrote on June 29, 2011 at 4:06 pm

And he didn't utter a word?

Truth came out in the follow-up article.

John O'Connor wrote on June 29, 2011 at 5:06 pm

And what information would his speech give? And, again, what follow up article?

Dean wrote on June 29, 2011 at 7:06 pm

Ronaldo, there is no follow up article. There were TWO separate reports of motels robbed at gunpoint today. That is two armed robberies in our sleepy little of C-U and it is only Wednesday. Armed robberies and violence are on the rise as we continue to let the inmates take over the asylum. Not to mention the multiple DUIs reported, random violence and property damage, the child pornographer as well as the scumbag who beat his cat with a metal bar. It is so very sad that our society has come to this.

Crime rates have been on the decline nationwide for years.

ronaldo wrote on June 29, 2011 at 8:06 pm

My bad on the follow-up article. Dean was correct.

I'll let you continue to think about the speech thing.

John O'Connor wrote on June 29, 2011 at 8:06 pm

But why won't you just come out and say what you mean? Why the hesitancy?

Dean wrote on June 29, 2011 at 6:06 pm

Sinfonian, so the victim didn't look at the robber's face but sure looked at his hand long enough to identify the weapon as a dark revolver. Surely the man wasn't wearing gloves.

The clerk did well to remember as much as he, or she did. If you ever have been robbed at gunpoint, you do good to remember anything except for the gun. Some snitch will give him up for the crime stopper money. Snitch money is cheaper than hiring more police. If you see some guy wearing a dark hoodie, with sunglasses, and a gun; ask him his name. There might be some money in it for you.
