Fisher teen charged with burglary
URBANA — A Fisher teen charged with burglary and escape is due back in court next week.
Champaign County Judge Heidi Ladd ordered Thursday that the 16-year-old boy remain in the Juvenile Detention Center until then.
He was charged in a juvenile delinquency petition filed earlier this week alleging that on June 24, he broke in to the baseball concession stand at the Fisher fairground on Randolph Street.
Fisher Police Chief Robert Bross said the youth allegedly stole candy from the stand, which he was selling to children around town. Bross said one of his officers approached a group of children and asked them if they had heard anything about the concession stand break-in. The children mentioned the teen selling candy, which led police to his house on Sunday.
Bross said police found the candy, which the youth had stashed in a space above his ceiling. He admitted he used a crow bar to pry open the stand and steal the candy, taking it with the intention of selling it.
Bross said as the youth was being transported to the detention center following his arrest, the officer noticed him reaching into his pockets and asked him what he was doing. The teen said he had pills in his pockets that he didn't want detention center employees to find. The officer then stopped the car on U.S. 136 and got the teen out. He then began running west while handcuffed behind his back, Bross said, adding that the teen eventually stopped and cooperated with the officer.
Assistant State's Attorney Adam Dill said besides the most recent charges, the youth also has two other pending criminal cases in juvenile court. He's charged with an Aug. 30, 2010, burglary to the Fisher Grade School and possession of a stolen vehicle for allegedly stealing his father's car on Feb. 9.
Dill said the youth had recently completed treatment at a mental health facility.
Ladd scheduled another hearing for Tuesday.
