Arrest made in north Champaign shooting, robbery
CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police have arrested a man wanted in connection with an early morning shooting and armed robbery in north Champaign Tuesday.
Assistant Champaign County State's Attorney Steve Ziegler said Dearion J. Jenkins, 20, who listed an address in the 1000 block of Northwood Drive, was picked up about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Champaign County courthouse.
He is accused of robbing and shooting Cedric Mallett, 41, in the 1100 block of Dorsey Drive at the Joann Dorsey Homes about 2:40 a.m. Tuesday.
Ziegler said Mallett was outside his own apartment when Jenkins allegedly demanded cash from him then shot him in the back. Mallett was able to talk to police at the scene. Carle Foundation Hospital officials had no information on his condition but police have talked to him there.
Jenkins is expected to be arraigned Thursday on two Class X felony counts: armed violence and aggravated battery with a firearm.
Champaign police detective Mark Huckstep said he spotted Jenkins outside the courthouse in downtown Urbana. He said he had no idea why Jenkins was there.
"I just saw him outside. I knew he was wanted, saw him and arrested him," Huckstep said.
Jenkins was sentenced to a year of conditional discharge and 50 hours of public service four weeks ago after pleading guilty to misdemeanor criminal trespass to land, according to court records.
