Man formally charged in shooting

URBANA — A Champaign man accused of shooting another man over a traffic jam is due back in court next month.

Champaign County Judge Tom Difanis on Wednesday arraigned Laquincy Harmon, 30, of the 1200 block of Hedge Road, for aggravated battery with a firearm.

Harmon is accused of shooting Mario Pettigrew, 18, of Champaign about 11 p.m. Monday in the 1200 block of Hedge Road. Pettigrew remained in serious condition Wednesday at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Deputy Champaign Police Chief Troy Daniels said Pettigrew was in a car that couldn't get through Hedge Road because of all the people in the street about 11 p.m. Monday. He got into an argument with Harmon, who allegedly shot Pettigrew as Pettigrew got out of the car.

Harmon then retreated into his home, where police arrested him several hours later after lobbing tear gas in. They had tried repeatedly to coax him out.

Harmon came out about 7 a.m. Tuesday and was taken into custody on a warrant that had already been issued for his arrest.

Difanis left Harmon's bond at the $1 million set by the judge who issued the warrant. He ordered him to be back in court Aug. 2 for a probable cause hearing.

If convicted of the charge, Harmon faces between six and 30 years for the crime.

Harmon is one of three men arrested for three unrelated shootings that have occurred in north Champaign since Friday.
