Murder charge filed in Champaign shooting

URBANA — A Champaign man, already in custody for armed violence in connection with a shooting early Tuesday, has now been charged with murder.

Early Thursday afternoon, Champaign County Assistant State's Attorney Steve Ziegler charged Dearion J. Jenkins, 20, with first-degree murder, in the wake of Cedric Mallett's death at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana about 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Jenkins, who listed an address in the 1000 block of Northwood Drive, was already scheduled to be arraigned on charges of armed violence and aggravated battery with a firearm following his arrest late Wednesday morning in Mr. Mallett's shooting.

Ziegler said Mr. Mallett, 41, was found by police outside his apartment in the 1100 block of Dorsey Drive at the Joann Dorsey Homes about 2:40 a.m. He told police that Jenkins shot him after robbing him of $20. Police interviewed Mr. Mallett again after surgery at Carle. Ziegler said Mr. Mallett picked Jenkins out of a photo lineup, identifying him as the man who robbed him after asking for cigarettes. Mr. Mallett said he was then hit in the head from behind and shot in the back.

Ziegler said police on Wednesday interviewed Jenkins, who told them he was attempting to collect a debt from Mr. Mallett while armed with a BB gun. Jenkins told police that someone else hit Mr. Mallett in the head and shot him, according to Ziegler.

Judge John Kennedy set Jenkins' bond at $1 million and ordered him to be in court Aug. 2.

Assistant Public Defender Katie Jessup said Jenkins lives with an uncle and a girlfriend who gave birth to their son Wednesday.
