Teen sentenced to probation in child porn case
URBANA — A Champaign teen who viewed child pornography over the Internet for at least two years was sentenced Thursday to four years of probation and ordered to have no access to the Internet.
"This was not inadvertent, not an accident, not innocent," said Champaign County Judge Heidi Ladd. "He knew it was wrong."
The 15-year-old boy pleaded guilty in late May to aggravated child pornography, admitting that on April 29, 2010, he downloaded multiple pictures of girls under 13 depicted in lewd sex acts.
The charge is a Class X felony, which if prosecuted in adult court, would require a prison sentence of between six and 30 years. The teen was charged in April of this year in Champaign County Circuit Court following an investigation by Urbana police.
Assistant State's Attorney Adam Dill and the youth's attorney, Walter Ding of Champaign, agreed that probation, to include counseling, was the appropriate sentence. Both agreed that his behavior in the Juvenile Detention Center for the past three months was exemplary.
The boys' parents testified that they were unaware of their son's addiction to child pornography and described him as a good child who was never in trouble at school or at home.
"I was totally shocked. I always knew what my child was doing," said the mother. "I didn't realize the danger was right there in my house."
"This is an eye-opener for every parent out there," said the woman, who admitted she knows little about computers other than logging on and reading her e-mail.
In the wake of her son's arrest, she said she talked to counselors at his high school about warning students of the dangers of inappropriate websites.
"Kids think they can get on and look up whatever they want and they can't," she said.
Speaking directly to the judge, the teen said he accepted full responsibility for his actions but conceded he had no idea of the consequences. He said his stay in the detention center had matured him and that he wanted to undergo counseling to better understand why he looked at pornography.
In addition to a prohibition on any kind of Internet usage, Ladd also ordered the teen to register as a sex offender and have no contact with any child under 13 unless that child is supervised by an adult over 30. He also has to perform 100 hours of public service.
