Rantoul man arrested for DUI after fleeing from deputy
URBANA — A Rantoul man who fled from police after driving the wrong way on a highway early Friday was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Stanley R. Schultz, 41, of the 100 block of Letchworth Drive, was arrested about 1:20 a.m. Friday after crashing his car. He was not seriously injured.
Champaign County Sheriff's Sgt. Dan Coile said a caller reported a possible drunk driver about 1 a.m. Friday on Leverett Road near U.S. 45 north of Urbana.
Coile said Deputy Jonathan Rieches saw the car turn off Leverett and go south on 45 in the northbound lane. Rieches used lights and later his siren to get the driver, later identified as Schultz, to pull over but he did not. The car did a U-turn at the Ford-Harris Road and went north on 45 in the southbound lane, Coile said.
At Thomasboro, Schultz turned east on County Road 2500 N with Rieches following. Coile said he ordered Rieches to stop pursuing Schultz when they had reached speeds in excess of 65 mph. Coile said Rieches had followed the car about six miles.
Coile said after Rieches slowed, he continued on and found the car had crashed into a deep ditch on the east side of County Road 2300 E near 2500 N. Schultz said he was not injured. Coile said Schultz failed field sobriety tests conducted by another deputy. He refused to submit to breath testing and was arrested for DUI. He was also given tickets for improper lane usage and aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer.
