Springfield man arrested for attempted armed robbery
CHAMPAIGN — A Springfield man is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $200,000 bond following his arrest in connection with an attempted armed robbery in Champaign over the weekend.
Rio M. Franklin, 20, who listed an address in Springfield, pleaded innocent on Monday to attempted armed robbery, aggravated discharge of a firearm and obstructing justice.
If Franklin is convicted of the most serious charge, he faces up to 15 years in prison.
According to a Champaign police report, a Champaign police officer was near the intersection of Second and Green streets at 3:25 a.m. Saturday when he saw a 28-year-old Champaign man running east through the Boneyard corridor toward the officer. The man said that somebody had just tried to rob him.
The victim said he had been heading to a friend's apartment in the 100 block of East Healey when he was approached by a man pointing a gun at him and demanding money and his phone. When the victim refused to provide the items, the robber fired the gun at him.
At that point, the victim then ran away and headed in the direction of the police officer.
No property was taken, police said.
University of Illinois police then found a man matching the description of the robber in the 300 block of Stoughton Street, later identified as Franklin.
When police arrested Franklin, the man allegedly put a bag of suspected marijuana seeds in his mouth. Police said Franklin possessed a gun at the time of his arrest.
Judge John Kennedy set Franklin's next court appearance for July 28.
