Rantoul man arrested on drug charges
URBANA — A Rantoul man is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $20,000 bond following his arrest on drug charges in Champaign on Saturday.
Donnie L. Caldwell, 44, who listed an address in Rantoul, pleaded innocent on Monday to unlawful possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and driving while his license has been revoked.
If convicted of the most serious charge, Caldwell could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
According to a police report, a Champaign police officer saw a vehicle driven by Caldwell fail to make a complete stop at the stop line on Bradley Avenue at McKinley Avenue at 9:43 p.m. Saturday. After the police officer activated the overhead lights, Caldwell pulled the vehicle into a nearby gas station but refused to stop.
Police said that Caldwell continued to drive the vehicle through the parking lot to West Beardsley Avenue and into another parking lot, where Caldwell left the vehicle and ran away. Police then apprehended and arrested him in the 900 block of West Bradley Avenue.
The report said that police found Caldwell with 3.1 grams of suspected cocaine.
Judge John Kennedy set Caldwell's next court appearance for Sept. 6.
