Woman charged with theft of credit cards

URBANA — A Champaign woman on probation for burglary for entering a business last year to use a forged check has been charged with a similar crime again.

Eugenia Estes-Keys, 32, who listed an address in the 200 block of Holts Drive, was arrested July 5 in connection with the May theft of credit cards from a locker at the Activities and Recreation Center, 201 E. Peabody Drive, C.

University of Illinois police Sgt. Tom Geis said on May 19, a woman reported that the lock had been cut off her locker and that her wallet, containing identification and credit cards, had been stolen.

Later that day, the victim learned that there had been two unauthorized purchases made with her credit card, including one at Meijer.

Geis said Detective Laura Tison obtained video surveillance from the store that showed a woman, later identified as Estes-Keys, using the credit card to buy a gift card, underwear, a diet aid and computer speakers. Tison also obtained video from ARC that showed Estes-Keys entering on May 19.

Geis said Estes-Keys apparently told ARC employees she wanted to check out the facility in hopes of joining and was allowed into the building unescorted.

Geis said Tison got a search warrant for Estes-Keys' home, and found the computer speakers there.

Estes-Keys was charged with burglary and is being held in the county jail in lieu of $25,000 bond. She's due back in court Aug. 30.
