Heritage senior killed in crash near Allerton

ALLERTON — A Heritage High School senior was killed in an early morning accident near Allerton.

Corey "Mikey" Childers, 18, of Homer was ejected when the car he was in rolled several times at 1:19 a.m. Wednesday, according to Capt. Dennis Wood of the Vermilion County Sheriff's Department.

Joshua Swisher, 22, of Homer was also in the car but was not ejected, Wood said. Swisher suffered multiple leg fractures, according to Wood, and was taken to Carle FoundationHospital in Urbana.

Wood said their vehicle, a 2001 Chevrolet Impala, was heading north out of Allerton when the driver lost control, and the car flipped over several times into a farm field. Wood said Mr. Childers was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wood said the accident is under investigation by the sheriff's department, which is doing interviews and collecting evidence. Wood said he's not prepared at this point in the investigation to say who was driving the car.

An autopsy for Mr. Childers was scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Heritage High School used its emergency call system to alert students and their families of the fatality, said Principal Tom Davis. The school is offering grief counseling to students.

Davis described Mr. Childers as "a super-nice kid" who was a big sports fan, especially of basketball.

It's very unfortunate for this to have happened. I would like to extend a prayer to the deceased and a fair warning to the living. Seat belts save lives!! Please read a very similar News Gazette article, had seatbelts been worn...

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/courts-police-and-fire/2011-05-07/seat-...

and yet this man was in his 60's.

Again, let us all pray, but let us also reflect...
