Police investigate shots fired in Urbana
URBANA — The Urbana Police Department is investigating a report of eight shots fired Monday night on the city's southeast side.
According to police Sgt. Dan Morgan, witnesses said a group of about 10 men was seen wandering in the area of the 2000 block of Vawter Street on Monday night.
About 10 p.m., the group arrived outside an apartment building on that block, and one person was seen on the west side of Vawter Street shooting toward the building.
Morgan said one bullet struck a car in the street, several bullets struck the building at the entryway and another bullet struck a second-floor window.
Morgan said police don't know if the man was shooting at a particular person or just at the building.
When police arrived a few minutes later, everyone had left the scene, Morgan said. No one was reported hurt.
Police recovered eight bullets and shell casings, Morgan said.
No arrests had been made as of Wednesday. The incident remains under investigation.
Come on now...are you really serious?!! Just because someone is on Section 8 does not mean they are the ones causing the problems. I live in an area where Section 8 tenant live and they are not the ones causing the problems...its usually people who don't even live in the area that comes and does the trouble...Please don't judge the Section 8 tenants until you have lived with Section 8 tenants and you have witnessed them in these actions. And for the record...I'm not a Section 8 tenant, I work EVERY DAY, I don't get LINK and I don't judge...not even you. I think you are judging and blaming because you don't know...stereotyping is not going to help the problem. When and if you see something brewing....give the police a call BEFORE "the pot boils over" so that they may do their jobs and get the REAL ONES causing the problems. Nine times out of 10 the troublemakers don't even live in the area.
Well, I live in the area and often walk my dog at night, and I will confirm that lately it is not uncommon to see large groups of thugs roaming the streets after dark here. There was a loud commotion/mob scene taking place over on Vawter a couple of nights prior to this also, but I did not dare to venture any closer to investigate..
can somebody here please tell me how many people actually were relocated to champaign county from the chicago cabrini green housing project? i've spent the last 20 years or so living in champaign and urbana, mainly in low-income section 8 neighborhoods so this type of violence is nothing new to me. i find it actually quite humorous that it has now spread across the area to the lower middle class neighborhoods. try living at bay harbor or north market street for a few years. welcome to my world folks. enjoy
There was a special grant given (above Section 8 money) to towns to pay for housing assistance for the displaced residents of the now closed Chicago housing projects. Tens of thousands were moved from the poorest and most violent areas of Chicago into small Midwestern towns across downstate Illinois. Now that grant money has run out, but the troubled and increasingly violent population remains.
These are not the same people that have been living next to you on North Market for the past 20 years.
Whenever something bad happens you always hear some people blaming everyone that is on Section 8 or the people that moved down here from chicago . First of all everyone that is on Section 8 are not all thugs or bad people. Just because someone may live in a low income housing does not mean that they are the ones doing all the crime. Most of the time a crime is committed here it is a long time resident of champaign-urbana. We have to stop putting the blame on other people and start putting the blame on where it is needed on the people that cause the crimes its their fault alone. It's just sad that people are getting blamed for something because they are recieving help from the state. And to answer the questions that will come from my statement No I do not get section 8, nor do I get any Link I get no assistance from the state at all and my tax money also helps provide assistance to those who need it and I don't judge anyone who is recieving help and noone should either.
We have a Section 8 house at the end of the block in our subdivision; a very nice, upper middle class area where we never had trouble before. Several "family members" have moved into this house and this is the ONLY house in this area where there have been repeated calls to 9-1-1. These people get out in their front yard and have shouting matches; using the "f" word at every opportunity - disturbing the peace. It is not long before a couple of police cars show up and "counsel" this bunch. I am truly worried that our Champaign neighborhood will be adversely affected by Section 8, as well. We want to move, but don't want to take a huge hit on our house. I suspect that as soon as people can get a better price for their homes, there will be a mass exodus and this neighborhood will also "go to the dogs".
Im not saying that everyone that lives in Section 8 are bad individuals, because that would be untrue. Sure there are plenty of good people that live there, but facts dont lie. The thing I get tired of listening to is people getting so sensitive when the facts come out and people comment on it. Who is responsible for these shootings? Its surely not the middle/upper class white community. Its rarely the Hispanic community. The facts dont lie and people need to start accepting that? The facts are this. 99% of shootings in the CU area are in a low income black neighborhood and the shooters are normally in their early to mid 20's, Should i even begin to mention all the robberies and mob-like beatings that happen on campus? Who is responsible for those? Yup, its the middle/upper class citizens. (sarcasm if you couldnt tell)
Make the ones that can, work doing something for the community or state for their section 8 and LINK card, this would give them less idle time to do ignorant and dangerous things. Grow up ya damn Baboons at the rate the economy is going maybe your free ride that nobody owes you will soon be over. The working class has been Opressed for way too long and a lot of the working people that don't have jobs anymore can't carry you any longer. No jobs no taxes paid to the government no more free ride for the flounders of our society. If you cut out the ones that dont need the help and are riding on everyone else's back (and more than likely stilll complaining) that is probably a large percentage of the these freeloaders. I could go on about this for a long time but I will stop now because it is futile to continue, society needs to get these people up off their Link card funded large from sitting doing nothing #&&!
This is not directed at the unemployed due to the economy but the people that have taken advantage of the system for many years, They know who they are and we all know who they are too, I see lots of them every day.
this is great. these ARE the same type of people that have lived in my neighborhoods for the past two decades in champaign and urbana. i have lived in primarily section 8 neighborhoods within champaign and urbana . murder, violence, drug dealing, vandalism, and burglaries have been occurring in high rates in my neighborhoods the entire time. now it's coming home to roost in the lower middle class neighborhoods across this community. enjoy what i have had to live with because it will only get worse. when people are rewarded with welfare for having more kids they have more kids and eventually these kids grow up and need a place to live. i love watching this 10 mile by 10 mile town slowly decay since the government didn't care until the crime wave began to spread into their neighborhoods. the more the news gazette posts these stories the more you guys complain and the quicker the property values drop, allowing investors to snatch up all these nice homes in your nice neighborhoods to rent to nice people who get government subsidized housing. it really is hilarious.
I totally agree, there is a lot of racism. I was called a number of vile things by a group of blacks walking in front of my own house last week. A number of white males have been beaten up ostensibly for their race by roving gangs of black thugs. So, I ask the black community, when will you end the hate and end the racist violence?
You cannot call truth racism you probably don't live in these decaying neighborhoods but if you owned a house and were dealing with the reality of it all you would understand. ghetto is ghetto and as far as the land of Lincoln it is not anymore it is the LAND OF LINKCARD!
Racism is alive you all say, well yes it is. This is not a color thing crime is happening every where around here. The c-u area, rantoul, mahomet everywhere. We need to stop with all the hateful racism this is crazy. Crime has no color blacks, whites, hispanics whoever is doing crime it's not just the one race its everybody! Like one person said if you want to do something besides complain do something in your community, help out, volunteer start a neiborhood watch but blaming one race is not going to change anything.
