56 evacuated during fire at Mahomet assisted-living home

MAHOMET — Fifty-six residents were evacuated from a Mahomet assisted-living facility Monday afternoon while firefighters put out a small fire.

Cornbelt Fire Chief John Jay said firefighters were called to Bridle Brook, 1505 Patton Drive, at 12:19 p.m. after people reported an unusual odor at the facility.

Cornbelt firefighters received assistance from the Bondville, Seymour and Sangamon Valley fire departments.

When firefighters searched the building, they discovered a fire in an air-handling unit inside Room 219, Jay said.

"The fire was isolated to a single room and had burned itself out by the time we found it," Jay said. "A motor burned in an air handler, causing a terrible stench."

While the firefighters were responding to the fire, Jay said the Mahomet-Seymour school district brought two school buses to the assisted-living facility. Jay said that 56 residents were evacuated from the building, with personnel from Arrow Ambulance helping to put the residents on the buses. Most of them were taken to the Mahomet Public Library, though some of them were taken to the Mahomet McDonald's.

Jay said the residents were returned to their rooms within about 90 minutes.

According to a fire department report, firefighters had the fire under control by 12:30 p.m. and left the scene at 2:30 p.m.

Nobody was hurt, Jay said.
