Urbana woman arrested for burglaries on UI campus
URBANA — Bond has been set at $10,000 for an Urbana woman arrested in connection with a series of burglaries on the University of Illinois campus.
Phyllis R. Jones, 43, who listed an address in the 2400 block of East Green Street, Urbana, pleaded innocent on Monday to burglary, theft with a prior theft conviction and aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.
According to UI Police Lt. Skip Frost, police identified Jones, a building service worker, as a suspect in a series of burglaries, including thefts of cash at the Activities and Recreation Center on July 4, July 7 and July 10 and at Campus Recreation Center East on June 29.
"Police detectives figured out she was using her ID to get in and out of the building on those dates, so she became a suspect," Frost said.
When police detectives observed Jones entering and leaving the Activities and Recreation Center on Friday afternoon, the detectives went to see if anything was missing, and they learned a purse had been stolen.
As Jones got into a white Cadillac outside the building, two patrol officers tried to stop her to question her, Frost said.
The police report said Jones drove away in her car, almost hitting a UI police officer.
According to the report, Jones tossed the purse from her car and took her children to another location before calling police to tell them she could be found at Washington and Rainbow View in Urbana. She was arrested there.
After Jones told police she had thrown the purse from the car, officers recovered a purse on a bike path along First Street between Windsor and Curtis roads.
Judge John Kennedy set Jones' next court appearance for Aug. 23.
