Man convicted of sexual assault from several years ago
URBANA — A Champaign County jury has convicted an Arizona man of sexually molesting a young girl in Champaign County several years ago.
Robert T. Jones, 57, of Cottonwood, Ariz., formerly of Urbana, faces up to 60 years in prison when sentenced next month.
Jones was criminally charged in September 2009 with four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child alleging that between January 1998 and December 2005, he committed sex acts with a girl under 13.
Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark said the acts alleged occurred in Urbana when the girl was between the ages of 4 and 10 or 11 and continued after she and her mother and Jones moved to Arizona.
Upon returning to the community as a teen, the girl told a local high school counselor about the acts and police were notified in 2009.
Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark had the girl, now 17, her mother and a police officer testify.
Defense attorney Jim Kuehl of Urbana called only Jones to testify, who denied any of the alleged sexual misconduct occurred.
The four counts of which Jones was convicted alleged separate sex acts. Clark said Jones faces mandatory consecutive terms of six to 30 years on two of the counts.
Clem set sentencing for Aug. 22.
