Danville man charged with filing false report over jail custody

DANVILLE — A Danville man who accused correctional officers at the Vermilion County jail of abusing him has been charged by the Vermilion County state's attorney's office with making a false police report.

Dezswan Love, 22, has been held at the county jail on $50,000 bond since June 17 when he was charged in Vermilion County Circuit Court with residential burglary, possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance.

Since his arraignment on those charges, Love had accused correctional officers of beating him at the jail.

Vermilion County Sheriff Pat Hartshorn, whose department runs the county jail, said sheriff's detectives investigated Love's claims and turned their information over to the state's attorney, Randy Brinegar. His office on Thursday filed new charges against Love, alleging that he made a false report to police, concerning the allegations of abuse.

Hartshorn said investigators found "absolutely no evidence" to support Love's complaint.

"Many of the facts of his complaint were not supported by video recordings of the jail," said Hartshorn, who added that after the allegations were made he met with Love, Love's mother and a representative of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to discuss Love's claims.

Love remains in custody at the county jail, awaiting his preliminary hearing on the charges filed in June and the new charge filed this week.

Love also has a court appearance scheduled in September, when he will be tried on charges in two previously-filed cases.

In those, he faces charges of possession of stolen property in April 2010 and residential burglary in October 2010.

Yep, another case of corruption in Vermilion County where beating citizens is common place. You make a complaint we will retaliate against you. That's vermilion County for you.
As the complaint made to the Illinois state police to investigate the brutal beating on september 19th 2009 by a officer on the Vermilion County Sherrifs Department that was well documented by the Knox County sherrifs department where the victim recieved medical treatment( after being refused medical treatment for 6 days while the victim was being held in Vermilion county jail after Vermilion county claimed to have local charges even tho the victim was never charged with any crime) for injures that clearly supported the injuries occured while the subject was in hand-cuffs, that was never investigated in Vermilion County or by the ISP and was covered up by the Vermilion county states attorney whom dropped all charges to prevent the victim from having a judge witness first hand the injuries that were a result of being tazed muliple times as well as being battered in the face ribs and included being choked and battered with the officers flashlight while 4 other Vermilion County deputies just stood by watching as the victim was HAND-CUFFED and not resisting arrest as the victim was already in hand-cuffs and laying on the floor as instructed. Then we have the case of a Vermilion County deputy killing a man armed with a piece of wood, a deputy that killed a subject that was armed with a cell phone. All clear examples of the corruption that is plauging our county.
Vermilion county has a long history of using eccesive force and battering citizens such as the case of the officer that battered a man at steak and shake and the entire force including the sherrif backed the offending officer untill the victim clearly left the county with no other option than to do the job they are suposed to be doing in the first place UPHOLDING the LAW not covering up the crimes committed at the hands of corrupt police officers. Someone needs to be investigating the D PD and the VC SD as it's all to clear that they are above the law and there is no over sight nor is there justice when they are the ones committing the criminal acts!

Links supporting these accusations please, or else they didn't happen.

Sounds like a lot of he said she said. And when it come to the officer at steak and shake there was no battery. it was a case where a person made a verbal threat to an off duty officer knowing he was an officer. The officer left the store and made a mistake and went back in to inquire why the threat was made. when he did the the person reached into his pocket and the officer drew his off duty weapon in fear of what the person may have been trying to produce. Until you deal with what an officer goes through day after day I suggest you keep it to yourself. You most likely are they type of person that would demand action by the police if anyone every made a threat towards you or your love ones but will not give a police officer the same rights. Police officers are targets day after day and the public thinks that is part of their job. Well its not. Police have the same right to safety and protection as does the citizens of the community

The fact that your user name is 420 leads me to believe you are not credible. Get serious if you want to be taken serious. You sound bitter against Vermilion County. Based on your rant, it sounds personal, like you were THERE.

wow dude you sound angry and bitter. nice rant homey.

danvillenative wrote on July 24, 2011 at 1:07 am

Oh Wow, where do i start. 420, like everyone else says you have no basis for any of your complaints. If any of these allegations were remotley true they would be all over the paper, but they are not. Which leads me to believe you are getting all these stories from your friends, which makes since. You are probably a career criminal like all your friends just looking for a buck or a way to bad mouth the guys, police, who get in your way of criminal activity. And as for the deputy that shot the man with a piece of wood, I'm sure he didn't wan't to have to pull that trigger, but he probably has a family at home that expects him home after his shift. And some stupid criminal with a sharp piece of wood isn't going to ruin his family's life. If you disagree 420 then let me come at you with a sharp piece of wood and see what happens, or how your family feels. I bet your family would want you to be armed with anything that could protect your life and if you had a gun then I'd bet you'd use it. It's sad somone has to lose their life, but any reasonable peron will not charge a cop, let alone with a sharp object. He chose his fate that
night.

And Mr. Sanchez, the Champaign police have admitted the shooting was an accident. But once again, who put himself in that situation, not the cop who was doing his duty to the city, but the person committing a criminal act. Chief Finney was there doing his job and an accident may have happened, but if this future astronaut wasn't there committing a crime it would of never happened.

This is a pretty despicable post. All arguments aside about whether the officer who shot him was justified, the man with the piece of wood who got shot was not a criminal at all. He was a mentally ill person who was shot while he was having a panic attack or something of that nature, if I recall correctly.

Oh, and also I hope that someone who is close to you who maybe isn't very well to do or very bright (or who maybe comes from another background that makes crass generalizations easy for small-minded people) never dies in a tragic accident, lest you get to see jackasses like yourself making pithy little comments about them being "future astronauts"...

I would love to know where people come up with these accusations. Names dates time place PLEASE! Anyone can make this stuff up! My best advice: Don't do anything that would land you in the hands of law enforcement. Seems rather simple to me - Don't beak the law- you don't have to deal with police. Personally, I feel police officers use more restraint than should be required.

MrSanchez wrote on July 24, 2011 at 1:07 am

Personally Nana25 I feel comments like yours are ignorant. Also, the 25 in your user name shows your "true colors". As for police using too much restraint, I guess when R.T. Finney, the City of Champaign Chief of Police, assisted in the brutal and horrific "KILLING" of an unarmed teenager that was too much restraint. Get real Nana!

nana25 wrote on July 24, 2011 at 6:07 pm

Is there some secret code if you have a number with your user name that I am not aware of? If you have a job, Ik now it is not in law enforcement or any other credible occupation that deals with these people who are looking for a free ride. You know-- jobs like lawyers, social workers, teachers, judges- those of us whose time is wasted day after day on losers like the one in this article

me1234 wrote on July 24, 2011 at 9:07 pm

I do not usually comment on anything, but on this I have to. I really think that all of you need to mind your own business and not speculate on other peoples lives. One of you say that someone "is a career criminal just like all of their friends".....get a grip on life. YOU do not know anything about that person. As far as the police doing unnecesary things to people....yes at times they do. For example I was at WalMart last night and saw them searching a kid accused of stealing. He DID NOT steal anything. They embarrassed him by doing it in front of everyone right out front with 3 squad cars! Seriously.....then they just let him go due to false assumptions. Another example is that someone I know was WRONGLY arrested for a crime that someone else did and made to stay overnight in jail until a judge could lift a warrant and the person that DID committ the crime came forward the previous night at midnight. The WRONGLY arrested was released from jail the next day with NO charges and NO bond. So everyone has their opinion, however if you do not know facts and can't not prove it......DON'T put someone else down! GROW UP!

freechampaign wrote on July 24, 2011 at 10:07 pm

Let me see WALMART security calls the police and say they have a person they believe is a shoplifter and you are mad at the cops for responding and doing their jobs? And you say your friend was wrongly arrested and had to spend a night in jail until the warrant was "lifted". Well if that person was arrested on a warrant again that is the police doing their job. A warrant is issued by a JUDGE and the police are at that point order by the judge to place that person under arrest when they come in contact with them. Do not see anything wrong with what the police did in either of these cases. Am I missing something here or are you just a cop hater?

danvillenative wrote on July 24, 2011 at 11:07 pm

Exactly, he really thinks the police just went to walmart, picked some random person to search, wrongly accused him, and then let him go. How stupid is this guy and then it's the cop's fault for arresting somebody on a warrant issued and signed by a judge. This guy is truly a cop hater, but I'm sure if anyone broke into his house who would he call, the POLICE. It amazes me that people like this really believe a cop is going to risk losing his job, career, and house just to harass somebody, ridiculous!

me1234 wrote on July 25, 2011 at 6:07 pm

BTW danvillenative I am a female with NO criminal backgroud AND I do not hate cops, I do not hate anyone or anything, BUT I do not agree or care for people or organizations that stereotype and/or talk badly about things/people they do not know!

me1234 wrote on July 25, 2011 at 5:07 pm

Ok first of all I did not say that the police were not doing their job....however they should have evidence without a doubt before going to someones home and arresting them as well as the supposed shop lifter......quite frankly I do not care about the guy in this article. I was referring to the ignorant posts and the slander to some other persons character that commented. So before you go making assumptions about who I am and what I do and don't hate......get some FACTS...like the police and JUDGE should have!

brothernumpsey wrote on July 26, 2011 at 12:07 am

1. Would you have had a problem with the person being "embarassed" like that if they had been guiulty of shoplifiting? They were searched for a reason. What would you have had them do?

2. Who told you you have to have "evidence without a doubt" before making an arrest? "Innocent until proven guilty" is resolved in the courtroom, not on the steets. It's the system we live under.

I understand being defensive of those you know and love, but try and be a little more objective.

nana25 wrote on July 25, 2011 at 9:07 am

TRY to "explain away" the reason it is okay for a citizen to make false accusations but it is a blatantly an offense against society when the police err. This guy knew what he was doing was lying- he was looking for $$$. Law enforcement was going on reports from others or orders from a judge. There is NO DEFENSE for this citizen's actions.
