BUCKLEY — A Lake County woman was killed when her vehicle was struck by a train near Buckley on Monday night.

Iroquois County Coroner Bill Cheatum said Tuesday morning that the woman, whose name he is not releasing at the request of her family, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:32 p.m.

She was a 47-year-old attorney from suburban Highland Park, Cheatum said.

Cheatum said the accident occurred as the woman was on her way to the Heartland Spa, a fitness and health spa in rural Crescent City, but got lost.

“She left Monday out of the Chicago area and was headed down to the Heartland Spa for a couple of days, and she did call her husband before the accident and said she hadn’t made it yet because she was lost,” Cheatum said.

The call to her husband was made sometime Monday evening, Cheatum said.

The Iroquois County sheriff’s office said the accident occurred about 8:25 p.m., 2 miles north of Buckley.

In a news release, police said a black 2007 Audi was eastbound on County Road 950 North and went around the crossing gates at the intersection with the railroad on the west side of U.S. 45. A southbound Canadian National freight train then struck the vehicle just in front of the driver’s door, throwing the vehicle into a ditch on the west side of the tracks, according to a news release.

Cheatum said the woman was the only person in the vehicle. Cheatum said the crossing was clearly marked and its gate was down.

The sheriff’s office, Iroquois County coroner’s office and the Canadian National Railroad Police continue to investigate the accident, the news release said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday morning, Cheatum said. An inquest may be held at a later date depending on the autopsy’s findings.

Buckley firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene.
