Fourth man pleads in Market Place shooting
URBANA — A fourth man has admitted his involvement in a May shooting outside at the Market Place Mall in Champaign.
Marquis Thompson, 22, who listed an address in the 2500 block of West Springfield Avenue in Champaign, pleaded guilty Thursday before Judge Heidi Ladd to conspiracy to commit aggravated battery.
He admitted that on May 1, after he had reportedly been attacked at a Champaign night club, he called friends in Milwaukee, who came to Champaign, located Tony Brock, and shot him outside at Market Place Mall.
Assistant State's Attorney Troy Lozar said Brock, 28, of Champaign, was one of several people who had allegedly beaten up Thompson at the night club.
Lozar said at the time of the shooting, which occurred about 4:30 p.m., Thompson was at the mall but not in the immediate vicinity of where Brock was shot by another man. Thompson left and was arrested in Chicago on June 7.
He was sentenced to two years of probation and 149 days in jail with credit for time already served.
Lozar said Thompson's only prior criminal conviction was a city ordinance violation for resisting arrest.
Three others involved pleaded guilty to the same charge earlier this month for community-based sentences. Cases against three others, including Dontrell Thompson, 22, of Milwaukee, the alleged shooter, are unresolved.
