Man sentenced to prison for shooting over woman
URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted he tried to kill a man in an argument over a woman has been sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison.
Judge Harry Clem imposed the sentence on Lamar Plant, 32, who listed an address in the 1100 block of Joanne Lane. He pleaded guilty in June to attempted first-degree murder, admitting that on Jan. 25, he shot Marquis Jones, 37, of Champaign, repeatedly outside the Freedom Oil gas station, 1202 N. Mattis Ave., C.
Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark said the two men were arguing over a woman that Jones used to date. Plant shot Jones once in the chest and fired two or three more times as Jones tried to run.
Court records showed Plant had prior convictions for aggravated battery, aggravated driving under the influence, domestic battery, possession of a controlled substance, assault, theft, and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
In other crimes of violence resolved recently with guilty pleas in Champaign County:
— Mannix Martin, 20, who listed an address in the 1300 block of Silver Street, Urbana, was sentenced to eight years in prison with a recommendation by Clem for the Department of Corrections' boot camp program.
Martin pleaded guilty last week to residential burglary, admitting that on May 9, he entered a man's apartment in the 2000 block of Philo Road, Urbana, intending to commit an aggravated battery.
Assistant State's Attorney Stephanie Weber dismissed other charges of home invasion and criminal trespass to residence in that case. Police reports said several men forced their way in. One of them had a bat which he swung at the victim, who deflected the blow.
Martin had also been charged with mob action and harassment of a witness for going to that victim's home two days later and taunting the man about the earlier crime. That case was also dismissed as part of Martin's plea.
— Dontrail Wright, 27, whose last known address was in the 2500 block of West Springfield Avenue, Champaign, was sentenced to six years in prison for home invasion.
He pleaded guilty to forcing his way into a home in the 200 block of East Hill Street, Champaign, on Dec. 5, 2008, and forcing some of the occupants to the floor. Of the four men involved, some had guns, and some did not, Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark said. The group was looking for drugs and money. The victims — three adults, two teens and a baby — were robbed of cigarettes, money and cellphones, police said.
Clark said Wright had prior convictions for obstructing justice, attempted burglary and resisting a peace officer.
— Quaran Irland-Coleman, 18, of Milwaukee, pleaded guilty to obstructing justice for his role in a May 1 shooting at the Market Place Mall in Champaign.
Assistant State's Attorney Troy Lozar said Irland-Coleman admitted he lied about who was in a vehicle that had come to Market Place in search of Tony Brock, 22, of Champaign, who was shot that day outside the Lenscrafters store.
He was sentenced to two years of probation and 92 days in jail with credit for 92 already served.
Irland-Coleman is the fifth of seven men charged with the shooting to plead guilty. All five who have pleaded so far have been given community-based sentences.
