Man arrested for hijacking in Urbana

URBANA — A Champaign man is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $50,000 bond following his arrest for aggravated vehicular hijacking in Urbana.

Antonio Chipman, 20, who listed an address in the 1800 block of Southwood Drive, Champaign, pleaded innocent on Monday to one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking and one count of vehicular hijacking.

If convicted of the more serious charge, Chipman could be sentenced to up to 45 years in prison.

Urbana police said that Chipman was armed with a gun when he took an orange Dodge Caravan from a 60-year-old Champaign man in the 700 block of Mathews Avenue in Urbana at 12:35 p.m. Friday.

The victim was not injured, according to police.

Police said Chipman was arrested after police found him in the 900 block of North Fifth Street, Champaign, at 12:15 p.m. Saturday.

Judge John Kennedy set Chipman's next court appearance for Aug. 23.
