URBANA — An Urbana man who was hit in an exchange of gunfire in north Urbana late last month has been charged with being an armed habitual criminal.

Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan said Aaron A. Jamerson, 20, who listed an address in the 1300 block of West Beslin Street, was arrested Monday after being released from Carle Foundation Hospital.

Jamerson had been there since early on July 30, after being shot in the side and leg. About 4 a.m. that day, Morgan said, Jamerson was on the corner of Goodwin and Eads when he allegedly opened fire on a group of people at a home in the 1200 block of West Eads.

An unknown person fired back, hitting Jamerson. The other man who was hit was taken to a hospital but was treated and released. Jamerson was more gravely injured, Morgan said.

After the shooting, Jamerson was found on the porch of a neighbor, who took him home. A relative called for help for him a couple hours after the shooting.

Morgan said police had difficulty getting a complete story out of the witnesses but were able to determine that two different caliber handguns were involved.

Because of prior convictions for delivery of a controlled substance and aggravated battery, Jamerson is not allowed to possess a weapon. He was also on probation for resisting a peace officer at the time of his arrest.

Judge Tom Difanis set Jamerson's bond at $250,000 and told him to be back in court Sept. 27.

If convicted of the armed habitual criminal charge, he faces between six and 30 years in prison.
