Hoopeston man's death by train under investigation

UPDATED 4:10 p.m. Thursday

DANVILLE — A Hoopeston man who was struck by a train in Rossville early Thursday morning died from multiple injuries, an autopsy confirmed.

Derek A. Rutledge, 28, was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m., according to Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson.

Johnson said that Mr. Rutledge was on foot when he was struck by a southbound CSX train near Green Street in Rossville.

“We’re still trying to sort out the details,” Johnson said. She added she is still waiting for toxicology results.

Johnson said Mr. Rutledge had been staying with friends in the area. She also said he had been with his girlfriend that morning.
