Prosecutor seeks to revoke probation of driver in fatal collision
MONTICELLO — The Piatt County state's attorney wants to revoke the probation of a White Heath man who turned in front of a motorcyclist last week, causing the man's death,
William Eiben, 48, was on probation for driving under the influence of alcohol when, on Aug. 4, he turned his van in front of Gordon S. Newman, 50, of Bondville, on Illinois 10 in eastern Piatt County.
Eiben told an Illinois State trooper that he was about to turn on to Interstate 72 to go east when the sun blinded him and he struck Mr. Gordon head-on.
Eiben was issued tickets for driving with a revoked license, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, transportation of alcohol, and making an improper left turn.
Earlier this week, Piatt County State's Attorney Dana Rhoades filed a petition to revoke the probation that Eiben received in March 2010 for a DUI conviction based on the tickets he received for driving under revocation and illegal transportation of alcohol.
Rhoades said she is still waiting for reports from state police and the results of chemical testing done on Eiben after the accident before deciding if any other charges will be filed against him.
An Aug. 30 hearing on the petition to revoke probation is scheduled in Monticello.
