Champaign man pleads innocent to armed robbery

URBANA — Bond has been set at $50,000 for a Champaign man arrested in connection with an armed robbery last month in Urbana.

Sherrick Cooper, 23, who listed an address in the 1100 block of North Third Street, Champaign, pleaded innocent on Monday to felony armed robbery.

If convicted, Cooper could be sentenced to up to 45 years in prison.

According to an Urbana police report, a 19-year-old Urbana man had been attempting to visit somebody in an apartment building in the 1000 block of South Smith Road, Urbana, at 11:21 p.m. July 27, and was coming down the stairs in a common hallway outside an apartment when he was approached by Cooper and up to four other men on the staircase.

Police said Cooper and another man both displayed handguns on the staircase, told the man to empty his pockets and ran off with $20 cash.

The victim was not injured, according to police.

The report said the victim knew Cooper and identified him to police as one of the robbers.

Urbana police Lt. Bryant Seraphin said METCAD sent police to respond to a 911 call about suspicious behavior in the 1300 block of South Lierman Avenue, Urbana, at 10:35 a.m. Sunday.

While police were investigating the 911 call, they recognized Cooper, realized he was wanted in connection with the July 27 armed robbery and arrested him, Seraphin said.

Seraphin said the other armed robber remained at large on Monday afternoon.

Judge Tom Difanis set Cooper's next court appearance for Aug. 30.
