No charges for man arrested for allegedly pushing woman out of car

CHAMPAIGN — No charges have been filed against an East St. Louis man arrested for allegedly pushing a woman out of his moving car on Champaign's south side Thursday morning.

Assistant Champaign County State's Attorney Steve Ziegler said both Darkel Martin, 24, and the woman he was accused of hurting, told police she fell and that he was trying to pull her back in the car.

Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said officers were called to the Windsor Road and Neil Street at 11:47 a.m. after a witness reported seeing a man push a woman out of a slow-moving car.

Dunn said the car was no longer there by the time officers arrived, but they found a 21-year-old woman who reported pain and discomfort.

Dunn said the driver later returned to the scene, and police arrested Martin for domestic battery.

The woman, who was not identified, was taken to an area hospital for a medical evaluation, Dunn said.

Can either of you read? The woman who fell out of the car corroborated the story. Whether it's true or not, it doesn't matter if she doesn't want to press charges.

Of course I can read. Anyone with half a brain cell can tell you that woman was a victim of DV regardless of whether or not she corroborated the story. If you know anything about the cycle of domestic violence, you would not be surprised that she doesn't press charges. I just hope she's able to get out of the situation before he succeeds in killing her.

Yes, Alabaster--I CAN READ! My initial comment was made and then the article was updated--please don't insult my intelligence! And in my opinion, it DOES matter that when a person is in trouble, she is afraid to press charges against a man who is mean to her (this is a general objective comment). Finally, I hope YOU (Alabaster) and others who can read also gain some understanding of abuse and how it "works"! Abuse is a terrible thing!

I was driving on Neil yesterday and assumed there must have been a terrible car accident as I turned on Windsor. I am shocked and truly saddened to hear that what I thought was an "accident" was actually an attempted murder. My heart bleeds for the 21 year old woman who was pushed out of a moving car on a busy intersection. The low life she was with was probably hoping he'd find her dead by the time he came back to the crime scene.
I am writing this hoping that the victim will read my message. Dear victim of domestic violence it's obvious why you don't want to press charges. You are a victim of domestic abuse who is probably terrified and so deep in denial that the man you are with tried to kill you. If you won't press charges then at least please please please leave this creepy sorry excuse of a man you are with. He tried to kill you. This time you were lucky, but next time maybe you won't be so lucky. Guys like him do not try to kill their victim once. Next time he may not try to push you out of a moving car into a busy intersection, but he will try to kill you again until he finally does. This psycho has no conscience and doesn't care about you or anyone else and there is nothing you can do to change him. The only thing you can do is change your situation by leaving him. If you stay with him maybe you'll be dead by next week or next month. You're 21 years old and have your whole life ahead of you. Kick him to the curb, seek help, move on and never look back.

Mikeyy the state does not have a case without testimony from the victim! Without testimony from the victim the state is powerless regardless of the truth. I'm curious to know what fine explanation you might have for why the man drove off after she fell out of the car since he was apparently trying so hard to rescue her from falling out of the car?? Yes, think before you speak.
