Robbery charges dismissed

URBANA — A Champaign County prosecutor Tuesday dismissed criminal charges against two men accused of robbery in what he described as a drug deal gone bad.

Assistant State's Attorney Chris Kanis said he dismissed the charges against Donald Brown, 32, of the 2700 block of Willowpark Drive, and Quantrell Walker, 27, of the 500 block of Robinson Court, both in Champaign, because he didn't think he could convict the pair.

"The number of inconsistencies between the accounts of the victims made me of the opinion the case couldn't be proven beyond a reasonable doubt," said Kanis.

Both were charged with armed robbery and unlawful possession of weapon by a felon. Brown was also charged with robbery.

The charges stemmed from a June 30 incident at Main and Cottage Grove in Urbana where two men in a car were approached by three men, two of whom had guns. The victims were robbed of cell phones and cash, they said, and went to a nearby gas station to call police.
