Teen injured in rollover crash

CHAMPAIGN -A Champaign teen was treated at a local hospital Friday morning after the sport utility vehicle he was driving rolled over in west Champaign.

Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Dan Coile said Michael A. Welge, 19, who listed an address in the 1600 block of Bentbrook Court, was headed west on Kirby Avenue near the Interstate 57 overpass when his sport utility vehicle left the road on the north side. He came back on and weaved back and forth across the road a couple of times before hitting a power pole, which broke into three pieces.

The SUV then rolled over onto its roof. Coile said Welge was out of it when deputies arrived about 2:15 a.m.

He was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where he was treated and released. Coile said Welge was issued tickets for driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage.

Coile said the SUV remained at the crash site for several hours because Ameren could not immediately get the power lines moved and the pole fixed. He said no one lost power to his knowledge but described the line as a main power line to subdivisions on the west side on I-57.
