Hume man dies in single-vehicle crash

CHARLESTON — A Hume man died in a single-vehicle crash east of Charleston on Tuesday morning.

According to a state police report, David W. Shamp, 51, of Hume, was driving a 2001 Toyota Tundra east on Illinois 16 at Coles County Road 2000 E at 9:46 a.m. Tuesday when his vehicle crossed the center line into the westbound lane.

The vehicle continued into the north ditch and traveled another 225 feet before it struck a tree, the report said. The Toyota became airborne, turned around and came to rest facing northwest in the ditch.

Mr. Shamp was taken to the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center emergency room, where he was pronounced dead at 10:37 a.m., according to Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers.

There will be no autopsy, Schniers said.

The cause of the crash was not determined as of Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

The state police, Charleston Police Department, Coles County sheriff's office, Ashmore Fire Department and Charleston Fire Department and EMS responded to the call, according to the report.
