Water valve repairs planned for Sunday in Champaign

UPDATED 2:10 p.m. Thursday

CHAMPAIGN - A boil order issued Wednesday for some houses in the vicinity of Prospect Avenue and Church Street has been lifted.

But a broken water valve stem that is causing bubbling water at the corner of Church and Prospect will probably be repaired on Sunday.

A water line in the 600 block of West Church Street was damaged on Wednesday by a contractor doing excavation in that block, according to Randy West, field operations superintendent for the Champaign district of Illinois. That caused a lane of Church to be closed for the water line repairs and homes in the vicinity were issued boil orders. Tests on the water on Thursday afternoon allowed the boil order to be lifted.

The repairs for the Church Street water line probably caused the broken water valve stem at the southeast corner of Church and Prospect, West said.

The valve stem repair itself won’t take long – eight hours or so – West said, but the company and city decided not to start until Sunday, in an effort not to disrupt traffic headed for the University of Illinois football game.

The east lane of Prospect and the south lane of Church will be closed for the repairs, West said.
