Champaign police seek suspect in campus-area mugging

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police are looking for a man who mugged and robbed a woman in the campus area early Saturday.

A release from Deputy Chief Troy Daniels said a 20-year-old woman was walking up to her apartment at 58 E. Daniel St. at 1:37 a.m. when she was approached by a man who hit her in the face and pushed her to the ground. While she was down, he grabbed her breasts and pelvic area.

The woman said she thought he ran because he heard a noise but not before he took several personal items from her. She said he ran west.

The victim did not receive medical treatment but her cheek was swollen from the attack.

The attacker is described as a white man in his 20s with short hair described as a buzz cut. He was wearing a black shirt and white shoes.

Police ask anyone with information about the attack to call Champaign police at 217-351-4545 or Crimestoppers at 217-373-8477.

It is interesting how when it's a white guy the newspaper seems to report the race of the suspect, but when it's a black man the description is usually not given or incomplete. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I think is going on. Somebody enlighten me!

I was thinking the same thing.

Alfonso, Can you explain to me what you're getting at with your comment? It seems like your pointing out some kind of agenda on the part of the N-G. Is there some sort of unfairness you're perceiving?

Yes Brownie, Alfonso is perceiving some kind of unfairness!

Your perceptions are interesting. The first two stories in the sidebar "More like this" describe balck male suspects. I'm not sure how you come to these conclusions but perceptions are not necessarily based in fact. Yours certainly don't appear to be.

Race is a frequent topic on these boards and I find it interesting. Why does it matter? Someone assaulted this woman. Frequently the descriptions are vague but that is all the police have to report. The NG writes a story that is based on the police report. Unless you believe that the NG and the police make up the races of suspects, I don't see the point. I can recall stories reporting suspects as black, white, asian, and hispanic. Isn't that simply news? What purpose would it serve for any newspaper to report only part of the description of a suspect? Do you believe that they only include physical descriptions of people over a certain height? People who are wearing certain clothing? People in a certain age range?

To interject such comments regarding an article about an assault suggests the author of the comment has ther own agenda.

What I think you are perceiving is your own bias. You may read stories that report the suspect's race as black but you assume that all assaults, rapes, drug deals, etc. are committed by black males in their late teens to mid twenties. You don't even process the race of the suspects in those stories. When you come across a story that reports the suspect as white, it doesn't fit within your belief system and you cry foul.

Profile Picture

I have seen tons of stories on the News Gazette where it is mentioned that the suspect was black. Quit your whining, crybabies.

Advice to any women--PLEASE DO NOT being walking around anywhere (even your own apartment at 1:30am in the morning)! Unless it's an emergency and/or you can't be with a group of friends, don't give muggers an opportunity to attack you! The scumbags are "out there" just looking for a gal to attack Please be careful.
