Arson cited as likely cause of Sunday morning fire

URBANA — Champaign County sheriff's deputies arrested a man Sunday morning in connection with arson at an Urbana church and nearby shed.

According to a fire department report, Carroll Fire Department firefighters were called to a fire at a shed on the west side of the New Life Christian Fellowship Church, 1211 E. Kerr Ave., Urbana at 4:45 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters from the Eastern Prairie and Edge-Scott fire departments also responded.

Carroll Fire Chief Steve Thuney said that firefighters found the shed fully involved in fire when they arrived eight minutes later.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 5 a.m., Thuney said.

Thuney said firefighters also found evidence that appeared to indicate that somebody had attempted to set the church building on fire at several different points.

"Based on what we discovered, we called in investigators from the Illinois State Fire Marshal's office," Thursday said.

Champaign County sheriff's deputies, with assistance from the arson division of the fire marshal's office, arrested a man and took him to the Champaign County jail. The sheriff's office was not releasing the identify of the man on Sunday evening.

Thuney said that nobody was injured.

Damage to the shed and its contents was estimated at $2,000. Damage to the vinyl siding of one side of the church was estimated at $1,000; and damage to the vinyl siding of a nearby residence was estimated at $500. In addition, a power line, valued at between $500 and $700, needed to be replaced, Thuney said.
