Bond set at $150,000 in kidnapping
URBANA — Bond has been set at $150,000 for an Indiana man arrested over the weekend for allegedly taking a Champaign teen and her infant daughter from a north Champaign home Friday night.
Miguel Flores-Ascencio, 26, of Lafayette, Ind., pleaded innocent on Monday to one count of kidnapping, one count of intimidation and one count of unlawful restraint.
Champaign police had issued an Amber Alert for the 16-year-old girl and her 2-month-old daughter about 12:30 a.m. Saturday after learning that a man had forced the two to go with him in a car about 8 p.m. Friday.
Deputy Chief Troy Daniels said Flores-Ascencio had come to the teen's house in the 1000 block of North Prospect Avenue to speak to her. She had her baby with her as she talked to him outside her parents' home. Daniels said Flores-Ascencio allegedly threatened to harm her family if she didn't go with him.
The charges allege that Flores-Ascencio confined the teen against her will, threatened to confine or restrain the baby, took her to a motel and turned off the teen's phone in an effort to prevent police from finding her.
After the girl's parents contacted police, officers found the girl, her baby, and Flores-Ascencio at a motel near Market Place Mall in Champaign about 9 a.m. Saturday. The teen and the baby were not harmed.
Judge John Kennedy ordered Flores-Ascencio to have no contact with either the teen or her daughter or her home and set his next court appearance for Nov. 8.
